At St Oswald's Catholic Primary School, our mission is to ‘Live, Love and Learn like Jesus.’ As a Catholic school, we are committed to helping our pupils grow in faith, wisdom and understanding, while developing respect and appreciation for the diverse world in which they live.

We believe that learning about other faiths helps children to recognise the dignity of every person as a child of God, develop positive relationships with others, and gain a deeper understanding of the communities that make up modern Britain. Through this learning, pupils are encouraged to be curious, respectful and open-minded, reflecting the Gospel values that lie at the heart of our school community.

Our Approach to Learning About Other Faiths

Religious Education at St Oswald's is rooted in the Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly, which recognises the importance of helping pupils understand both the Catholic faith and the beliefs and practices of other world religions. Learning about other faiths provides opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding of religion, culture and identity, while recognising both similarities and differences between faith traditions.

Alongside the study of Catholic Christianity, pupils learn about the beliefs, traditions, worship and lived experiences of people from other faith communities. This learning is carefully planned to be age-appropriate, engaging and meaningful, helping children to appreciate how faith influences people's lives and communities.



Learning about other religions also supports our commitment to promoting British Values, particularly:

• Mutual respect for those with different faiths and beliefs;
• Tolerance of people from all backgrounds and traditions;
• Understanding and appreciating diversity within modern British society;
• Developing responsible, informed and respectful citizens.

Through this work, we aim to foster a culture of dialogue, understanding and respect, ensuring that our pupils are well prepared for life in a diverse and interconnected world.

Enriching Learning Through Faith Encounters

We believe that some of the most powerful learning takes place through direct encounters with people of faith. Each year, pupils participate in enrichment programmes led by visitors and specialists from different faith communities. These experiences enable children to learn from authentic voices, ask questions, explore religious artefacts and gain first-hand insights into the beliefs and practices of others.

Our programmes include:

• Islam, delivered by Muslim Learning Services;
• Hinduism, delivered by Hinduism Education Services;
• Judaism, delivered by Ann Angel Education.

These programmes include a whole-school assembly, age-appropriate classroom workshops and opportunities for pupils to reflect on and celebrate their learning. Through these experiences, children develop knowledge, understanding and respect for people of different faiths while recognising the values that unite us as members of one human family. Our parents and families are always invited to participate in these days of learning.
