HISTORY

‘The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future’ - Theodore Roosevelt

At St Oswald’s we aim to inspire a curiosity within our pupils about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children will know how the past influences the present. Learning in history will enable our pupils to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. Our history curriculum intends to achieve the following:

  • Inspire a curiosity and fascination of our locality, Britain and the wider world.
  • Equip pupils with the knowledge about how lives have changed within living memory, the history of Britain and how it has influenced, and been influenced, by the wider world.
  • Develop their knowledge and understanding of significant aspects of the history of the wider world like ancient civilisations and empires; learn about the lives of significant people of the past; understand the methods of historical enquiry; and be able to ask and answer questions.
  • Provide pupils with the opportunity to gain historical knowledge and skills, not just through classroom-based learning, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits.
